I-65 Shelby County Sinkhole Update

Emergency Sinkhole Repairs 1/4 mile South of the Valleydale Road Interchange (Exit 247) at Pelham, in Shelby County

BIRMINGHAM – On Thursday, July 1, at approximately 8 a.m., a sinkhole occurred in the median of I-65, 1/4 mile south of the Valleydale Road Interchange (Exit 247) at Pelham, in Shelby County. State transportation engineers continue to assess the damage to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole and to finalize repair plans.

The repair work initially required the I-65 Southbound inside (left) shoulder and travel lane to be closed in the area of repairs for an undetermined length of time.

The I-65 Southbound inside (left) lane and shoulder will remain closed through the Fourth of July Holiday weekend. The two I-65 Southbound outside (right) lanes will remain open to traffic.

All I-65 Northbound lanes will remain open to traffic through the Fourth of July Holiday weekend, unless the condition and severity of the sinkhole makes it necessary to close additional lanes.

The sinkhole will be monitored throughout the weekend, as a precautionary measure, to ensure that the safety and integrity of the I-65 travelway can be maintained.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction operation.

I-20 Work Halts for Holiday Weekend; Blasting Resumes Thursday Night

ST. CLAIR COUNTY – Work on Interstate 20 as part of the Alabama Department of Transportation’s project to widen the last four-lane segment of the roadway in St. Clair County will be halted over the Fourth of July weekend, beginning Friday, July 2, at 2 p.m. and ending on Monday, July 5, at 6 a.m. There will be no traffic delays or interruptions during this time.

Beginning around 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, the eastbound lane near mile marker 148 (close to the Brompton Exit 147) will be closed for blasting. A rolling roadblock by Alabama state troopers will slow I-20 traffic in both directions until blasting is complete.

Motorists should expect slower traffic and minor delays.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists may want to consider using alternative routes and adjusting arrival/departure times. Motorists should observe work-zone speed limits and other work-zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. State troopers will control traffic and strictly enforce speed limits.

Secretary Chapman Releases Additional Elections Information

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

MONTGOMERY, AL – Secretary of State Beth Chapman announced an uncertified total of provisional ballots being reported from all 67 counties today.  The uncertified total is 1,790, which is less than the total in the 2006 Primary Election when there were 2,376 provisional ballots cast.  In 2006, 829 of those provisional ballots were counted as legitimate ballots.  “Provisional ballots will play a vital role in determining the final numbers of the vote totals this year for the gubernatorial and other primary races statewide,” Chapman said.

Nell Hunter, who is the state’s longest serving registrar and serves the state’s largest county, said that her provisional ballot total is 308.  She says this is typical for Jefferson County and that they were processing the ballots quickly.  “We should have no problems with counting this number of provisional ballots as we do for every election.  The number of this year’s provisional ballots is very closely aligned to elections in the past.  This is nothing we haven’t seen before,” Hunter said.

At this time, there is no way to know to which candidates to attribute these ballots or to which party.  That information will be forthcoming from the counties as they verify and process the ballots that should be legally counted.

Chapman said that provisional ballots will be counted in each county on June 8.  After the provisional ballots are counted, each county executive committee of the political parties will certify the county-level election results.  The chair of each county executive committee must then certify those results to the chair of the state executive committee not later than noon on June 9.  Not later than noon on June 11, the state executive committees of the political parties must meet at the State Capitol to certify and declare the election results for all offices.  Then, not later than June 17, Secretary Chapman must certify to the counties the names of all candidates who will be on the ballot for the July 13 primary runoff election.

“The candidates are anxious and want the elections officials to count ballots quickly, as do we. Most importantly, we want them to take the time to ensure that it is accurate,” Chapman explained.  “The counties do an excellent job of managing elections at a local level for the citizens of this state.  Every job and every vote is extremely important as we have definitely seen with this election,” Chapman said.
