I-65 Shelby County Sinkhole Update

Emergency Sinkhole Repairs 1/4 mile South of the Valleydale Road Interchange (Exit 247) at Pelham, in Shelby County

BIRMINGHAM – On Thursday, July 1, at approximately 8 a.m., a sinkhole occurred in the median of I-65, 1/4 mile south of the Valleydale Road Interchange (Exit 247) at Pelham, in Shelby County. State transportation engineers continue to assess the damage to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole and to finalize repair plans.

The repair work initially required the I-65 Southbound inside (left) shoulder and travel lane to be closed in the area of repairs for an undetermined length of time.

The I-65 Southbound inside (left) lane and shoulder will remain closed through the Fourth of July Holiday weekend. The two I-65 Southbound outside (right) lanes will remain open to traffic.

All I-65 Northbound lanes will remain open to traffic through the Fourth of July Holiday weekend, unless the condition and severity of the sinkhole makes it necessary to close additional lanes.

The sinkhole will be monitored throughout the weekend, as a precautionary measure, to ensure that the safety and integrity of the I-65 travelway can be maintained.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction operation.

I-20 Work Halts for Holiday Weekend; Blasting Resumes Thursday Night

ST. CLAIR COUNTY – Work on Interstate 20 as part of the Alabama Department of Transportation’s project to widen the last four-lane segment of the roadway in St. Clair County will be halted over the Fourth of July weekend, beginning Friday, July 2, at 2 p.m. and ending on Monday, July 5, at 6 a.m. There will be no traffic delays or interruptions during this time.

Beginning around 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, the eastbound lane near mile marker 148 (close to the Brompton Exit 147) will be closed for blasting. A rolling roadblock by Alabama state troopers will slow I-20 traffic in both directions until blasting is complete.

Motorists should expect slower traffic and minor delays.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists may want to consider using alternative routes and adjusting arrival/departure times. Motorists should observe work-zone speed limits and other work-zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. State troopers will control traffic and strictly enforce speed limits.
